*Family Tree DNA test #119596 verifies that Paul Castleberry Gillispie is the father of Ulysses Grant Gillispie, even though he is not listed as one of Paul’s children. He would have been conceived while Paul was home from the Confederate Army recuperating from a wounded arm.

**Ulysses was living in South Carolina in 1910 with a Dicy Jane Gillispie, Age 77, in his household. He would have been age 45 at the time. Although it is not proven that Dicy Jane was his mother, it is reasonable to assume so. Nor is there any evidence that Paul Castleberry Gillispie was ever married to a Dicey Jane.

One possible identification of Dicy Jane is the daughter of William and Anne (Kelly) Holiday who was listed in the 1850 census as age 16. The Holidays and Gillispies were neighbors in Anderson County S.C. That makes her age match up with the Dicy Jane living with Ulysses in 1910. It might also be the source of a family tradition of a relationship to “Doc” Holiday.

“Uncle Bert” - Alberta Westmoreland Gillispie, who was credited by family tradition as having raised Ulysses, was married to Margaret Elizabeth (Peggy) Kelly. He purchased Maverick house and renamed it Refuge. Home of the Maverick brothers of TV fame. Donated land for Refuge Baptist Church where Ulysses and Sara are buried.

Gillespie is ranked 790 among last names in the US.
