Tuesday’s elections might well be the first round of a new battle for the soul of America. In a number of key races, conservatives and republicans are showing real strength.
In Virginia, which voted for Obama in ‘08, Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell has an eleven point lead over the liberal democrat Creigh Deeds.
n Heavily Democratic New Jersey Conservative Republican Chris Christie is dead even with Liberal Democrat Gov. Jon Corzine. An even more conservative third party candidate Chris Daggert has a solid seven percent share. With him out of the race, the Republicans would be well ahead in New Jersey.
In a New York State Congressional race, Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman is mounting a serious challenge to moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava and Democrat Bill Owens, In this race the real battle is between very conservative Hoffman and Moderate Scozzafava. The liberal democrat is holding a distant third.
Atlanta has a real chance of electing a white mayor for the first time in thirty five years. While this is a non partisan race, the black democrats are trying to paint current leader Mary Norwood as a republican. She is in fact a far left “progressive” who would otherwise fit right into the pattern of recent Atlanta leaders. But her opponents are determined to make it a racial campaign. The misleading suggestion that she is a republican may very well work in her favor if the anti Obama tide is running as deeply as it appears.
In any event. Next Tuesday will be a long day for the national Democrats.
